International Circulation: High blood pressure is leading risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, so proper management of hypertension is very important to improve the prognosis. How do you think we can diminish the gap between the guidelines and what we do in clinical practice?

Professor Sleight: Guidelines are very often focused on people with hypertension. What we have to do in populations is focus on the prevention of hypertension in the population. So, preventative measures include reducing salt levels in food. They include having smaller portion sizes, and using the Western population as a guide, they have got fatter and fatter and the same is going to happen in the Asian population - a combination of a lack of exercise and just feeding people too much. Fast food companies have a lot to answer for – they have just promoted bigger portion sizes than are reasonable.
